Seattle’s General Strike of 1919, shown through first food co-ops. .” The Seattle General Strike of February 1919 was the first city-wide labor action in America to be proclaimed a “general strike.”
- From 1907 to 1916, the IWW carried out more than thirty free-speech demonstrations in the U.S. This was a civil disobedience action mounted in public defiance of a Spokane City Council ordinance banning speaking on the streets that was directed against IWW organizing.
The Suffragists and women’s right to vote. Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment guarantees all American women the right to vote.
1933 Battle at Congdon Orchards - The Yakima Valley 1933 conflict was one of the most publicized agricultural labor disturbances in Washington history. The central issue in Spring of 1933 was the question of low wages.
1933 Grand Coulee Dam built - Grand Coulee is the largest dam in the Columbia River Basin and is the largest concrete structure ever built. While hydropower is the primary purpose of the dam today, the public desire for irrigation was the driving force behind its construction.
In 1925 Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was organized by African American employees of the Pullman Company in August 1925 and led by A. Philip Randolph and Milton P. Webster.
1932-33 Hunger Marches in Olympia, Washington: Since state officials were not providing much in the way of aid to those hurt by the Depression, the Vanguard newspaper and the Unemployed Citizens League decided to bring the people’s demands straight to Olympia.

The WPA supported tens of thousands of artists, by funding creation of 2,566 murals and 17,744 pieces of sculpture that decorate public buildings nationwide. In this division, professional women were treated equally to men, especially in the federal art, music, theater, and writers’ projects.
On July 16, 1953, The Seattle Times suspends publication for 94 days due to a strike by writers and editors organized in the American Newspaper Guild.
