Water works was created through a neighborhood mapping process where we located the most toxic locations in our neighborhoods against the common walking pathways of our children. When we looked at the near west side neighborhoods children’s walking patterns and we found an abandoned gas station at 45th and Detroit to be one of the most toxic areas where children were often waiting for the bus or departing from highschool. We transformed this site by covering the structure with murals inspired by photographs of clean and toxic water.
